Funding for volcano crisis

Save the Children Australia has today welcomed $400,000 of Australian Government funding to help manage the aftermath of the Ambae volcano evacuation in Vanuatu, as part of the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP).
24 October 2017
The entire population of Ambae was evacuated to the neighbouring island of Santo where more than 11,000 people are living in evacuation camps and host communities. These people need humanitarian assistance.

This includes 5000 children who have had their schooling and lives disrupted.

Save the Children has been responding to the crisis since a state of emergency was declared on September 26.

In support of the Government of Vanuatu Save the Children has distributed hygiene kits and implemented other measures to reduce the spread of disease. The aid agency has also established community-based committees to support the protection of women, children and those with disabilities.

Save the Children has reached more than 1000 children through the setup of 15 child-friendly spaces which are providing the opportunity for children to learn and play in safety.

The child rights organisation has also trained 45 teachers to manage the child-friendly spaces.

"This funding is vital to ensuring safety and stability for displaced children on Vanuatu," SCA Vanuatu Country Director Georgia Tacey said.

Save the Children will use the funding for programs that focus on gender, protection and psychosocial support for the displaced population.
