UNCRC Article 27: food, clothing and a safe home

Learn how we address children's rights to food, clothing, and shelter under UNCRC Article 27. Your support makes a real difference. Donate now.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Article 27 says every kid deserves the basics – good food, proper clothes, and a safe place to live, all conditions of living necessary for the child’s development. One in five childhoods are impacted by hunger and starvation, this guide explores how you can help Save the Children Australia in our mission to uphold UNCRC Article 27.

What is UNCRC Article 27 about?

This article says children should never go without food, clothing, or a safe home. It recognises that every child deserves these essentials, irrespective of their background or circumstances,  and that it’s the role of parents to ensure that their kids have what they need to grow up healthy and happy, or governments where parents are unable to provide these necessities.

What does a safe home mean under Article 27?

Beyond a door and four walls, a safe home under Article 27 is an environment where young people feel secure, loved, and can learn safely. In times of crisis and disaster this can be difficult or impossible to maintain, Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) like Save the Children Australia offer emergency assistance in these instances to ensure rights like these are upheld for vulnerable children.

How does Article 27 address clothing needs?

Clothing provides protection from the elements and better hygiene but is also core to young people’s identity and dignity. Without appropriate clothing, socialising, building self-confidence, and a sense of belonging are all made more difficult if not impossible.

Challenges around emergency responses and Article 27

In emergency situations, such as the crises in Ukraine and Afghanistan or the global climate crisis, Save the Children’s rapid response helps to ensure that the rights outlined in Article 27 are upheld. We try to provide immediate aid, such as food, clean water, healthcare, and shelter, and stay to support long-term recovery.

The role of cash and voucher assistance

Cash and Voucher Assistance programs, like those implemented by Save the Children in emergency response relief, are crucial in enabling families to address their specific needs post-disaster. This approach empowers them to make choices that best suit their situation, thereby upholding the dignity and autonomy of those in crisis.
