Tangible acts of empathy

22 January 2025, Impact of Our Work

Concern for children sparks community fundraising efforts

At a time of ever-increasing challenges for children around the world, Save the Children supporters consistently show up and demonstrate compassion and empathy. They make the work of our teams possible, even in some of the world’s toughest places, through their kindness and generosity.

It is a source of comfort that our global movement can count on our strong community of passionate individuals and caring partners.

Here are just some of our supporters’ tangible acts of empathy for the children of Gaza in the past year. We hope they inspire you and spark more ideas to make a difference.

Walking the length of Gaza Strip

Dema demonstrates having a heart that beats for children.

The North to the South of the Gaza strip is around 42 kilometres long. This is also the distance that community fundraiser Dema and her friends walked to raise funds for the conflict-affected region.

After learning of the situation in Gaza, Dema knew she had to act. She got in touch with our team to express her support by raising funds. Along with her friends she raised nearly $4,000, not just from friends and family in Australia, but from all around the world.

Dema gained a deep realisation after they completed the walk. The effort of walking a long distance was nothing compared to the suffering of children in Gaza.

We were humbled by the experience as at the end of the day, we went home, had access to food and water, could rest and we were safe.

Photographs for Peace

Agender, a production company focused on supporting female and non-binary photographers, launched ‘Photographs for Peace’, an art print campaign fundraiser to support the humanitarian response in Gaza.

A total of 35 female Australian photographers – both prominent and emerging – from the Agender collective each donated a print to raise funds for the emergency efforts of Médecins Sans Frontières and Save the Children.

With the cost of their artwork usually ranging from $200 to $7,000, the artists priced each print at an accessible price of $70, allowing admirers to own their art while contributing to the fundraiser.

At the end of the two-week campaign, an amazing 300 art prints were sold.

The war in Gaza is harrowing. Every day, people are putting their lives on the line to save others. I hope that our work as photographers and artists can contribute, even in some small way, to two organisations that are working tirelessly on the front lines.

Making a difference with Macarons

Watermelon macarons sell like hotcakes.

Specialty macaron maker Eggu Bakes specifically created special watermelon macarons to raise funds for Gaza.

Eggu Bakes shares on Instagram, “I have been nervous all week, but it went without any hiccups. We raised $150 from watermelon [macaron] sales, which will be donated to Save the Children Australia.

“It is absolutely devastating what is happening in Gaza and I wanted to do what I could to raise funds. I felt very helpless which led me to research different organisations to support.”

I chose [to support] Save the Children because the majority of the population in Gaza are children, who especially do not deserve to suffer.

These are just some of the many generous Australians who fundraise for Save the Children every year. By joining with like-minded individuals in your community, you too can raise much-needed funds to make a difference, while taking part in an engaging and fun event at the same time.
