Save the Children in the Pacific

We’ve been working to improve the lives of Pacific children and families for over 50 years. We work with civil society, governments and communities to drive change.

Working towards a brighter future for children

Save the Children Australia supports families and children in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Tonga, as well as collaborating with our Fiji office. Our Pacific vision is to eliminate malnutrition and violence against children, and ensure safe, inclusive learning for all by 2030.

Challenges in the Pacific

The Pacific region is home to diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes, but it also faces significant challenges. Many children and families grapple with barriers to accessing quality health care and education while also facing violence in their homes and communities. Factors like climate change, gender inequality, a rising youth demographic, and limited social safety nets further compound these challenges, making it difficult for children to grow up happy, healthy and strong.

Our approach

Save the Children takes a comprehensive approach to addressing these issues, focusing on the core themes of health and nutrition, education, and child protection. We’re supporting communities to adapt to the growing challenges of climate change as well as prepare for - and respond to - disasters.

We’re proud to work alongside communities and governments to help children like Lucy (4) from Solomon Islands grow up happy,
healthy and strong.

Through innovative and at-scale programming, we aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of children and families across the Pacific, measuring results at a regional level.

Some of our landmark initiatives include:

Our strategy to help eliminate malnutrition and violence against children, and ensure safe, inclusive learning for all by 2030.

Informed by the evidence

We produce rigorous research and evaluations, which we use to design and improve our programs. The publications provide evidence-based insights into the effectiveness of our programs and the unique challenges faced by children and families in the Pacific. We’re particularly proud of:

Partnerships

We believe in the power of partnerships to drive sustainable change. We’re proud to work closely with national and sub-national government authorities, Civil Society Organisations, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to deliver impactful programs. At the regional level, we actively engage with organizations such as The Pacific Community, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, and the University of South Pacific.
