With Africa predicted to be heading into the worst drought in a decade, the African hunger crisis is going to get much worse - which means more African drought aid is desperately needed. We have repeatedly called for a dramatic increase in funding as we estimate we need an additional 100 million dollars to enable us to provide the African drought aid needed but we are seeing huge shortfalls in the funding we need.
We are working hard to help as many children and their families as we can by making sure every dollar donated to us is invested to deliver the best possible outcomes for children at the lowest possible cost, but, we still need your help! Below is how you can donate to the African drought aid to support our teams in Africa and help save millions of children’s lives.
Save the Children is one of Australia's largest aid and development organisations and we believe every child deserves a bright future. We do everything we can to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. Millions of people are suffering in Africa and we need more people to urgently donate to the African drought so we can continue to provide much-needed African drought aid.
Want to help? Here is info on the African drought aid we are providing and how you can donate to the African drought.
Our African Drought Aid
We have been providing African drought aid for over 70 years. In 2021, we reached 12,185,726 people in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, including more than 7,624,620 children. The African drought aid we provide, (made possible when you donate to the African drought) includes the setup and ongoing operation of Emergency Health Units that enable us to provide life-saving supplies & health provisions and screen children for malnutrition & provide treatment. Being dedicated to delivering lasting results, we also implement several initiatives that focus on creating long-term impacts.
Some of these initiatives include:
-
Supporting women-led loans and savings groups so families can start small-scale businesses, run sustainable kitchen gardens and raise livestock appropriate for drought-conditions
-
Implementing resilience programs to address the long-term impacts of climate change
-
Supporting the establishment and training of community-based disaster management committees
To ensure the effectiveness of these initiatives, we produce evaluation reports each year to assess outcomes and ensure continual learning.
