A combination of conflict, the COVID pandemic and the impacts of climate change have led to an unprecedented global hunger crisis with nearly 50 million people on the brink of famine. The Australian Government has the power to fight the famine and help save millions of lives, but it needs to ACT NOW.
Together, with a coalition of community and other humanitarian organisations we are calling for urgent action from the Australian Government to respond to the global hunger crisis. And you can help. Below is more about the work we are doing as a famine relief charity to provide immediate aid and how you can support our pledge to the Australian Government to step in and help.
Save the Children is one of Australia's largest aid and development organisations. We help millions of children & their families in over 100 countries across the globe. We believe every child deserves a bright future and we do everything we can to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. When a crisis strikes, we rapidly respond to save children's lives and remain to help with recovery.
Together, we can help prevent millions of children suffering from malnutrition and dying of starvation. Here is the work we are doing as famine relief charity and how you can support us in our mission:
How We Are Helping Children & Families
In a crisis, children are always the most vulnerable. With the current hunger crisis, children too young to walk are surviving on less than one meal a day in some of the hardest hit countries. Without adequate nutritious food, children cannot develop as they should. They are at a high risk of acute malnutrition which can lead to stunting, irreversible damage to their physical & cognitive development and death - and right now, there are almost 8 million children under the age of 5 who are at risk of severe acute malnutrition.
As a
famine relief charity we have teams located in countries around the world working hard to help these children. Some of the aid we are providing to help children and their families affected by the hunger crisis includes:
- Providing emergency nutrition for severely malnourished children
- Providing humanitarian cash assistance for families
- Setting up Emergency Health Units so we can screen a child for malnutrition and provide life-saving healthcare, nutrition and treatment services
- Supporting treatment centres by training staff and providing life-saving supplies
- Setting up rehydration posts in some of the worst-affected areas
In addition to providing the immediate aid required to ensure children & their families are getting what they need to survive and thrive, we are also lobbying the international community to address the root causes of food and nutrition insecurity.
