Aged just 10, Sabimaana* arrived in Uganda having escaped the extreme violence in his homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo. A few years later, the pandemic caused more disruption to his education. Now living in Uganda’s Kyangwali refugee camp, Sabimaana has enrolled in one of Save the Children’s Catch Up Clubs – programs designed to help children catch up on learning and gain the literacy and social skills they need to succeed.
“It is very important for me to learn and read in order for me to achieve my goals.” explains Sabimaana. “I'm so happy when I'm at school with my people, learning and planning our future.”
Thanks to our incredible supporter community, children like Sabimaana can attend our Catch Up Club sessions which are conducted by trained volunteer Community Learning Facilitators. As well as a focus on literacy, they include wellbeing and psychosocial support components, which is key to children’s development.
Sabimaana shares, “I like the Catch Up Club because it has helped me with confidence for public speaking and will help me in the future. My dream is to help other people, especially with psychosocial support.”
